Transcript of my Interview

I chose to interview my dad because he understands our economic recession and is concerned with losing his job or being transferred to another state/country in order to keep working.

Hey, dad ok so how has the new California Budget impacted you?
Well, the only change I would really take notice in is the increased funding to the California State School system. Which in turn hopefully reduces your tuition (haha).

How do you feel about the new budget?
I believe Governor Schwarzenegger is doing a great job and actually seems to be concerned with our state’s economic budget. We need an effective leader with a plan if we want to make any progress with our current deficit.

What changes have you made because of this crisis?
During this recession not only the state but all of us need to reduce unnecessary spending and make more money. I stopped putting money into the stock market and haven’t taken out any loans for your education in fear that I won’t be able to cover their cost in the future. This new budget aims to create jobs, which is great because I might lose mine and need a new one soon.

  1. 1. Is it one-sided? why? is it authoritative? why?
This interview is rather one-sided. It only takes on one person and one point of view (being that of a person whose budget and mentality is affected by the state budget change), after all. The interview is also not absolutely authoritative. Your father does not seem to work for the government and does not possess the in-depth knowledge of what exactly is happening with the budget that someone in that position would, though he does as you claim, appear to be understanding of the reasons behind the budget cuts as well as some potential outcomes of it. also, judging from the first question, your father seems to be concentrating on the part of the budget cuts that have to do with the school system.

    2. How can the argument here be taken further? What can it become?
Firstly, the interview could have been longer/could have consisted of more questions. Also, instead of asking what your father personally feels or is affected by the changes, ask about how he thinks the changes will affect the state or different parts of it, or why the changes are being made/being made now/etc, or even what other changes he thinks could be made to improve California. Lastly, some what if questions could have been mixed in for both variety and so as to make clear of your father's stance (such as: If the tax rates were to be raised as high as 10 percent instead of just 9.xxx, how would you feel?)
